How it all began

The Royal Bank of Scotland, the second bank to be founded in Scotland, was established by royal charter in Edinburgh in 1727.

The Royal Bank began issuing banknotes in 1727 and still does so today.

In 1728, just months after it had started trading, the Royal Bank granted the world’s first overdraft.

The Royal Bank’s first branch office opened in Glasgow in 1783.

The Royal Bank launched its first mobile bank in 1946, serving remote communities on the Isle of Lewis.

The bank’s daisywheel logo, unveiled in 1969, was inspired by piles of coins, arranged into the shape of four inward-pointing arrows.
