Andrew Allison Law

Andrew Allison Law (1916-41) worked for National Bank of Scotland.

Andrew Allison Law was born in Edinburgh on 23 November 1916, the son of Thomas Law and his wife May Marshall Allison Law. He attended George Watson’s College, Edinburgh, from 1929 until 1934.

In 1934 Andrew Allison Law went to work for National Bank of Scotland. He was still there, working in the bank’s Edinburgh head office, when the Second World War broke out in 1939. Law immediately joined the Royal Air Force, becoming a bomber pilot.

Second World War

In April 1941 his plane crashed into the sea on its return journey from a bombing mission. He and his crew spent three days and two nights in a dinghy without food or water before being rescued. Law suffered frostbite, but later returned to active service. He also survived a further crash in August 1941.

Pilot officer Law was killed when his plane crashed while trying to land in heavy fog at night on 3 September 1941. He was 24 years old. He was buried in Edinburgh, and is commemorated on National Bank of Scotland’s memorial to staff killed in the Second World War.
