Helping your business stay safe, secure and to thrive
We wanted to share some information on the most common impersonation scams affecting businesses today.
Criminals are using technology to impersonate employees, suppliers, and other companies. They can intercept emails or use a compromised email account to trick people into paying money into an account that they control.
They might even call you claiming they’re from our security team. Common scams include:
- Invoice redirection. You’ll try to pay an invoice to a supplier but the criminal intervenes to get you to redirect the payment to their account instead.
- Email compromise (CEO fraud). They’ll pose as a company exec and dupe you into making an urgent payment to their account.
- Payroll fraud. They can even impersonate real employees and ask HR to pay future salary payments to a new fraudulent account.
- Telephone fraud, or vishing. Calls that pretend to be from the bank, HMRC, NHS or other public bodies asking for payments to an account they control.
These are just a few examples. Fraudsters aren’t just cheeky chancers. They’re organised, ruthless criminals who use sophisticated techniques to con people out of their money.
Fight fraud with us
- Don’t make any changes until you’re sure they’re genuine: Should a customer tells you that they’ve changed their account details, call them and check using a number from their website.
- Create a ‘speak up’ culture: Your employees are your greatest asset, so train them to be your best defence. Remind them to question every transaction and have a system in place to deal with suspicious callers.
- Telephone tips: Never give details of PINs, passwords, or digital banking codes over the phone in any circumstances. Even if the caller claims to be from us or a company you trust.
- If the caller asks you to enter a series of numbers into your handset, stop. This is a scam. They want you to set up call forwarding to prevent genuine callers contacting you.
- You’ll never be asked to scan a QR code, neither will we need to text a QR code to your mobile phone.
